• Trick-or-treating is thought to have originated with an ancient European custom called “souling” where people went house-to-house on All Saints Day (November 2), asking for small breads called soul cakes in exchange for prayers.
  
  
• In some European countries, groups of people traveled door-to-door asking for food and drink in return for a performance or song. The masks and white robes they wore are considered to be the inspiration for today’s modern Halloween costumes.
  
  
• According to Irish legend, jack o’ lanterns originated with a man named Jack. Banished from heaven for his evil ways and denied entrance into hell because he had tricked the devil, Jack was forced to wander the earth forever with only a coal from hell to light his lantern. To keep the coal glowing longer, he placed it inside a hollowed-out turnip. Though the Irish made early “Jack’s lanterns” out of turnips, they switched to pumpkins when they came to America and found turnips less plentiful.
